Overview

Weegee for EE

What’s with the name? Well, this was developed for those times when you’re using a “weblog as a gallery”. I thought of “WebGal”, “Galog”, and a bunch of other losers. “WG” is too short, so “Weegee” it is.

This works well if you have one weblog that is used as a “gallery”. Unfortunately, in a rush, this only works on a field whose Field Type is “File” – which is another 3rd-party extension, by Mark Huot. You can get File by Mark Huot here. You enter one field id (the field id for the File field you have) – and Weegee will put a thumb from that field on the Edit page. This also only works with one weblog right now (hey, you’re getting this free, so quit with the bellyachin’).

NOTE: If you need an image preview that will work with a regular custom field, or with more than one field in different weblogs, you should check out LG Image Preview. It takes the main idea behind Weegee and runs a bit further. (I haven’t confirmed whether it will work with a ‘File’ field type).

Basic Steps for Installing and Using Weegee

  1. Put lang.weegee.php in your /system/language/english folder
  2. Put ext.weegee.php in your /system/extensions folder.
  3. Enable Weegee in Extensions (Admin > Utilities > Extensions Manager)
  4. Enter the field id number of the File field for which you want to show thumbnails
  5. Change the width of the thumbnails, if desired

Settings

Weegee settings

There are two settings.
Field ID – Select the field ID for which you want to show thumbnails.
Width (in pixels) of the thumbnail – Defaults to 80 pixels (which is a pretty generous size). Keep in mind, these images are not currently cached as “real” thumbnails!

EE Forum Thread

You’re welcome to leave comments here, but I’ll bet most of the action is on the EE Forums. The related EE Forum thread for Weegee is here.

    Hi, Ryan!

I was ecstasized by the extension, until I change title of an uploaded image… After changing it, i was surprised by disappearance of thumbs from EDIT-panel.

I find out, that the reason is in broken path to the image. So, now it looks like this: FILE_PREVIOUS_NAME.JPGfile_current_name.

Are there any way to make the extention use correct path to the image?
